“when you don’t create things, you become defined by your tastes rather than ability. your tastes only narrow & exclude people. so create.” —

I’d agree with this statement….though it’s a difficult principle to keep in practice.

“In every aspect of your business (and personal life) try to allow others to build their success around your own success. If you run a hotel, what can you do to permit others—airlines, luggage retailers, tour guides—to be part of your network? Rather than viewing their dependency on your success as a form of parasitism, or worse, as a rip-off, understand this tight coupling as sustenance. You want to entice others to create services centered around the customer attention you have won, or to supply add-ons to your product, or even, if it is a new-fangled idea, to create legal imitations.” —New Rules for the New Economy (via heyitsnoah) (via somethingchanged)

2. The piece may be fabricated.
3. The piece need not be built.

Saw “Up” at The Byrd Theatre. Mayumi liked it. Kai had endless questions about it. I was a sucker for the love story aspect.

“Sometimes people are reluctant to disclose the reason for their depression because it is embarrassing or sensitive, they find it painful, they believe they must soldier on and ignore them, or they have difficulty putting their complex internal struggles into words. But depression is nature’s way of telling you that you’ve got complex social problems that the mind is intent on solving… When one considers all the evidence, depression seems less like a disorder where the brain is operating in a haphazard way, or malfunctioning. Instead, depression seems more like the vertebrate eye—an intricate, highly organized piece of machinery that performs a specific function.” —

Two scientists suggest that depression is not a malfunction, but a mental adaptation that brings certain cognitive advantages: Scientific American

“It makes perfect sense to me that folks like me are drawn to genres that frequently investigate what it means to be an unusual human (on a quest, lost in a distant galaxy, prophesized, cursed, vital, altered, hunted, etc.), or what it means to be an alien, or a sentient machine…in short, what it means to be “other.” —

This also leads to the role of Afro-Futurism in carving a space for other identities. Growing up I often found myself reading queer fiction as well and recognizing that same space of otherness. This literary space, whether based on internal or external difference is very politically important. It is necessary to get some sign that you are not alone, especially during adolescence and post-adolescence. -notational

“You don’t know that you exist.” —My son Kai. Age 3. Perhaps he heard this in a movie, but it was very strange to hear it come from him as I was waiting for him to get in the bathtub this evening.

“I don’t believe in total freedom for the artist. Left on his own, free to do anything he likes, the artist ends up doing nothing at all. If there’s one thing that’s dangerous for an artist, it’s precisely this question of total freedom, waiting for inspiration and all the rest of it.” —
